15 Sep 2022: A main contractor for the Northern Distributor Road linking Coonagh and Knockalisheen is expected to be on-site by the middle of next year. The council stated that tender documents for the main contract are being prepared, with a view to having a contractor appointed and on-site by mid-2023.

26 Mar 2021 Construction of the Coonagh to Knockalisheen Road has begun following the government’s go-ahead for the multi-million euro project. Limerick City and County Council appointed Roadbridge for the contract following a competitive tendering process.
The new road is a key element of the Limerick Regeneration Framework Implementation Plan and the works will comprise of the 2.2 kms of new urban dual carriageway with footpaths and cycleways; 600 metres of new urban single carriageway road with footpaths and cycleways and 2 kms of major improvements to an existing urban single carriageway road.

The works comprise:
Construction of 2.2km of new urban dual carriageway with footpaths and cycleways
600 metres of new urban single carriageway road with footpaths and cycleways
2km of major improvements to an existing urban single carriageway road with footpaths and cycleways along with minor improvements to 1km of existing rural single carriageway roads
Two bridges over the Limerick to Galway railway line
Three new roundabouts
Two traffic signal-controlled junctions
In addition to opening up the Moyross estate, the construction of the road will help to:
Facilitate the future commercial, residential and recreational development of north Limerick City
Improve pedestrian and cycle facilities, to reduce travel time, thereby encouraging this mode of travel
Improve connectivity of the local and regional road network in the northern part of Limerick City
Promote balanced local and regional development
Reduce travel times for commuters in the north of the city
Facilitate the development of an effective public transport system to serve north west Limerick City.
It is expected that the works will take 33 months to complete.
