16 Feb 2025 project delayed a further 3 years with an estimated completion of 2031
The North-South Interconnector is a proposed 140 kilometre, 400 kV transmission line extending from Turleenan in County Tyrone to Woodland in County Meath. The North South Interconnector will add a new 400 kV overhead line to the network. The line will connect the electricity grids in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
Currently there is only one interconnector between Northern Ireland and Ireland. A problem on this interconnector could result in widespread power failures. To limit potential issues, we have to restrict the amount of power that can flow through the interconnector. These levels are well below what electricity users need.
A second North South interconnector would allow the network to operate much more efficiently. This project proposes a new 400 kV overhead line to connect the two electricity grids.
The line would run through:
– Monaghan, Cavan and Meath in Ireland
– Armagh and Tyrone in Northern Ireland
